Dental implants from Advanced Cosmetic Implant and Laser Dentistry in Seattle consist of three main parts:
- The implant—also called a post or artificial tooth root
- The abutment—a connector piece
- The prosthesis—artifical tooth crown, dental bridge, or denture/partial denture
In this post, we consider the abutment.
What Is An Abutment?
The abutment is the connector piece between the implant and the prosthesis. It attaches to the implant and connects it to the crown, dental bridge, or dental arch.
Healing Abutments
You may receive a temporary abutment following the initial surgery. A healing abutment is sometimes referred to as a ‘healing cuff’ or ‘healing cap.’
When the implant has fused with the bone and is ready for the final abutment, the healing abutment is removed and the permanent abutment is affixed.
How Is The Abutment Attached?
Attaching the abutment is a fairly quick and easy. An incision is made to expose the implant. Then the abutment is attached. The prosthesis may be attached at the same time, but sometimes we wait until the gums have healed.
